Nohru Pass

Kothikodh - on the trail to Nehru

District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh

Position - N32 06.214 E76 49.322

Altitude – 3255 metres above MSL

Trail Orientation – West - East

Closest Settlement(s) – Kothikodh (West), Chherna (East)

Its a pass so reclusive, even some of the locals at a 5 km radius have not heard of it. Its a trail so steep and non existent, it could almost beat Himri. As a result, where humans don't set foot too often, nature takes its own course, Monals abound, vegetation exists healthily and snow melts late. Just 7 km off the Barot-Bada Gran road, its a path less travelled. Like Robert Frost said, take this path and it could make all the difference. Amongst other things, if you are trekking in Spring or early summer, look out for walking in a glade of red and pink Rhododendron flowers, opening out to the grassy pastures of Badhdhar.

Nohru connects the Uhl valley with the Lumba Dugh valley, itself an Uhl tributary. The green wheat fields of Kothikodh with some beautiful trees greet you on the trail on the western side. On the other side are the mystic villages of Chherna, Bhujling and Swarh. Swarh has a forest rest house of the British times, which till recently had a visitor book starting 1921, signed by Lords and Majors of Sunsetthe British empire. Tells you how many people have ever come to this place. Also tells you how beautiful this place actually is.

Trekking to Nohru:

From Badhdhar, used as a base camp, to Nohru and from Nohru to Baghnar, which is the base camp on the other side, there is hardly any trail. Its just the simple matter of visually seeing where you are headed and walking straight up or zig zag, as your legs fancy. If straight is what you fancy, you are in for walking on all fours at times, not being able to sit because of the steep slope and losing breath every 5 steps. On the other side, sliding down on snow or on the dusty ground is often a better option than walking down. Its easier, its faster, it seems safer, its less tiring.

While just the pass can be crossed in 2 days or even 1, starting from Kothikodh and ending at Lohardi, adding a walk from Bir through Billing and Rajgundha is recommended. It adds some great views of the Dhauladhars, a beautiful sunset and some great camping grounds along with a nice, cold refreshing bath in the Uhl. With time on your hands, its even better to add the Sari Pass trek to Kullu and make it a much richer experience.
