Trek Route
The trek starts from Naddi/Salli. Both are easily accessible from Dharamshala. The trail for this trek is mostly easy to find and walk on. It only gets steep to and from the pass. Click this link to see the map of the trail on OSM (Open Street Maps).
- Naddi -Rava: From Naddi, head west along a small jeep road and get down on the Naddi Kareri trail. Follow this trail past Gatadu till it crosses the Ghasutri and Gaj streams. After crossing the Gaj stream, leave the Kareri trail and head north towards Rava. Rava is a 20 minute walk from here.
- Rava - Kareri Lake: From Rava, head north towards Dhradhka and walk past the Government Primary School. Keep to the left bank of the Gaj stream and follow the trail till you see a prominent green ridge with a small white temple atop it. Cross the Gaj stream over a makeshift wood bridge and walk along the left bank of the stream. This trail goes up and down for sometime before breaking away from the stream towards North West. Raeel is a clearing in the woods with a few seasonal shepherd huts. After passing the huts, head West and follow the small stream right upto the Kareri ridge top. Head further West towards the lake which would be in eyesight now.
- Kareri Lake - Charkhotu: You reach the lake from the Eastern ridge and head out from the Western ridge. A steep westward slope leads down the ridge straight to Dhaledh, on the banks of the Baleni rivulet and identifiable by a row of 5-6 shepherd huts. Cross the Baleni stream here and walk north along the right bank of the stream past a few other huts at Raeel and Chala. As the stream takes a North West turn upwards, cross the stream and aim for the few scattered huts on the left bank. This is Charkhotu.
- Charkhotu - Baleni Pass: From Charkhotu, walk along the left bank of the stream heading for the first ridge. Head north on the ridge, cross a small tributary of Baleni stream and head North East along the steep basin of another tributary. Once you reach a clump of few trees and stone seats, head North and then the trail curves Eastwards. From here on, the trail heads due East right upto the pass. The pass is characterized by a few stones put atop each other with a couple of small red flags visible from quite some distance.
- Baleni Pass - Duggi Goth: From the pass, as you look East and see the view posted on the Trek summary page of this trek, head left (North-East) towards the large glacier/stream. The trail is clear and steep. The moment it touches the glacier/stream, it flattens out and you can find some rock overhangs and camping places.
- Duggi Goth - Darkund: You will see a clear path laid out once you are near Duggi Goth. This runs along the left bank of the stream all the way to Darkund through thick jungles and a few shepherd stops.
- Darkund - Barehi/Dharbala: If you keep walking along the left bank of the stream, the trail will meet the Chamba Bharmour highway, SH52 at Dharbala. If you choose to cross the stream from one of the various bridges after Darkund and walk along the right bank, you can reach Barehi. From Barehi, an unmetalled road, 6 km long leads to Dunali on the Chamba Bharmour highway.
