Trek Route

The route for this trek takes you through some scenic countryside, a shepherd route and a beautiful lake. There are then the views of the many Dhauladhar peaks. Look for the following points to find your way. Use this with the GPS Trail on this page or with the OSM Frame here.

  1. Dharamkot – Guna Mata: From Dharamkot, take the road towards Galu Temple. Just 50 metres on the road, get off the road to your left. You will see a water pipe, walk along this. The water pipe will take you to Tibetan Children's Village school playground. Cross the playground and on the other side, take the path towards Naddi. At Naddi, turn right towards Balh. The trail will take you straight through to Guna Mata. In case you lose your way, there will be enough people around.

  2. Guna Mata – Nauhli: From Guna Mata, you will see a concrete path leading into the jungle below. After a few metres, this path becomes a jungle trail, which will take you straight down to the Ghasutri Stream. Cross the stream, walk on the ridge opposite and then cross the Gaj stream. Past the Gaj stream is the Rava village. From Rava, take a right up towards the hill, leading to Khadbai. Keep a white primary school building in view, you will walk past this. This is Khadbai. Once you are at Khadbai, you will see Kareri. Keep along this trail, which is more or less level, just climbing slightly and takes you to Kareri Forest Rest House. From Kareri, follow the Kareri Nauhli trail. It runs at a level slightly higher than Kareri village and leads straight to a large stream after about an hour. Cross the metal bridge on the stream and turn left. Nauhli is a 10 minute walk.

  3. Nauhli – Dhaledh: From Nauhli, walk towards West, keeping in sight a neck formed by two ridges. Cross the neck, you will also see a new unmetalled road. The paved path will lead straight down towards Salli. Once you cross Salli, cross the Balaeni stream near the Powerhouse over a bridge and walk along the right bank. The trail is straightforward, has plenty of camp sites, should you feel like camping early. It goes past a temple, Chandrela Mata and the water inlet tunnel for a hydroelectric project. You will see Sujo's huts on the left bank a few minutes after the water tunnel. Cross the stream and stay in these huts.

  4. Dhaledh – Sheetla Mata: From Dhaledh, looking eastwards (left from Sujo's huts exit doors), you will see a steep slope upwards. It has a thick jungle of spruce. The main trail is along this slope, there is an alternative one just on the ridge next to the stream. Aim for the top of this slope and you will reach the west end of Kareri lake. From Kareri lake, look for the outlet of the lake, which forms the stream. It is on the south end of the lake. The trail starts on the right bank and moves to the left bank after 50 metres. It is easy to find and walk on. After Jammu Goth, it switches back to the right bank and veers off the stream. Another hour of walk and a stream crossing over rocks will lead to the metal bridge you used for crossing towards Nauhli. From Kareri village, head south, cross the village and walk on some concrete steps for 5 minutes. You will see a small water source and a couple of rooms slightly towards the right. This is Sheetla Mata.

  5. Sheetla Mata – Talnu: You are back in a populated area, easy to find your way. There are many options. The one I took was past the Gatadu village across the Gaj and Ghasutri streams. Visually, you are headed for a large school building with a tin roof visible from Sheetla Mata towards the east.
