Trek Route

Dharamshala is easy to find and reach (read more here). Once you are in Dharamshala, take the road towards Dharamshala bus stand and follow the same road upto Gharoh. 2 km further down from Gharoh, at this point around 11 km from Dharamshala, at a hairpin bend to the left, a road diverges to the right, straight in line with the road you are travelling, towards Ghera. There is a board which clearly indicates this along with the distance to Ghera, which is 9 km. From here, there is only one road to Ghera, passing a powerhouse. Ghera is also served by 5 buses from Dharamshala in a day.

From Ghera, a trail starts to the left towards the stream. A ramshackle hanging bridge to cross the stream and the trail to Kareri starts. The trail crosses another stream on a wooden bridge and then runs along the stream. Just after crossing Dhraka village, the trail climbs straight to the ridge. On the ridge top is Kareri village.

The Forest Rest House at Kareri is at the farther end of the village. The trail to Kareri Lake passes along the rest house and takes a left after a water tank, around 100 metres from the rest house. Once this trail reaches a stream, the trail is simple. Each time the stream branches into two, take the trail along the larger stream or always take the stream branching left. Most of this trail is paved with stone steps and is easy to find. The stream leads the trail straight to Kareri Lake.

The entire trail along with the road from Dharamshala can be found on this page or on this frame on OSM (Open Street Map).
